day three
5/16/15
breakfAst
Today started out with a breakfast of French toast, watermelon, yogurt and two eggs. You may have noticed I am posting quite a few food pictures and that is mainly because that was one of my small worries about coming on this trip. I tend to be a picky eater, but everywhere we have gone so far has had food that I like.
health care Testing
Next we went over to the market to set up the health care testing. We got the local Belizean's height, weight, heart rate, blood pressure, and glucose levels. I mainly did the blood glucose testing in which some numbers were surprisingly really high. Some of the people with the high blood sugar knew they were diabetic and others didn't know what that was or how to treat it. We made sure to ask when they ate recently and what they had eaten because that would affect how we could interpret the readings. Then we would give them advice on what to eat to not have as high of a blood sugar, common breakfasts included tacos, burritos, or a couple tortillas. Those breakfasts also tended to lack fresh fruits.
lunch
Once we finished up the testing we headed to lunch. Today a group of us tried a place called Guava Limb which was a really nice place to eat. We all ordered desserts that we got before our actual meal, most of the group got red velvet cheese cake, and I got a chocolate roll type of dessert. For my actual meal I tried the French salad.
cahal pech ruins
After that we took a break at the log cab-inn to regroup then headed over to the Cahal Pech ruins. This site of ruins was more spread out and had many more structures for living areas than the last which was mainly larger structures. Sam and I raced up a structure with tall stairs to the sacrificial alter at the top. The place also had an area they would use as an arena for games.
dinner
Our dinner was a beef stew, potatoes and salad with blue cheese dressing. I thought it was ranch and scooped a bunch up on a cucumber and it was not what I expected. After we finished up we had an orientation for the road building work we will be doing for the orphanage tomorrow.
